Last Sunday, a most despicable act took place when gunmen attacked St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, during the early morning mass.
At the end of the shooting spree, scores of worshippers lay dead and several others were injured. The injured were taken to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.
According to the Nigerian Police Force, the attack was the fallout of a drug war between two indigenes of the community who reside in South Africa. Apparently, one of the parties decided to revive the long-drawn feud in Nigeria.
Since the attack took place, I have not ceased to think about man’s inhumanity to man. How do you allow innocent people suffer for what they know nothing about? How do you choose a place of worship to carry out such a dastardly attack?
The grisly nature of the incident can be likened to a terrorist attack. I am sad that one man can take laws into his own hands and wreak havoc of this nature. As it stands, no one knows if there is going to be a reprisal.
What is going to happen to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the attack? I hope the government is not going to let the perpetrators go unpunished.
Already, two persons have been identified as being behind the attack and by now, the Federal Government ought to have launched a manhunt for them.
Irrespective of their wealth or social standing, they must be brought to book. The government must ensure they don’t go unpunished. This will serve as a deterrent to others. If this particular incident is not properly handled and those behind it prosecuted, I won’t be amazed if other Nigerians begin to settle their grievances in a similar manner.
